WAYOB, 7min., Mexico, Experimental

Directed by Renata M Sheppard, Dfaniks

The Maya believe we each have a spirt-animal companion. The ancient Maya called it their “Way” (pronounced ‘why’) and the Maya today call it “Nahual”. “Wayob” is the plural form of way, a Mayan word which means “sleep”. Animal transformation is a mystical aspect of meso-american culture which references both the light and dark sides of human nature. In Yucatec Maya, it denotes a person who can transform into an animal while asleep. In this film, we are introduced to three characters who abstractly tell a story of transformation through connecting to the animal spirit in an abandoned hacienda outside of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
