Get to know the writer:

What is your screenplay about?

Webbed is about a merry band of spiders, who set out to rescue one of their own, captured by a ruthless arachnologist before she could tell her colony of a vast new land she has found, that would solve their overcrowding problem. Things immediately get complicated when a wimpy spider of the colony tags long with the “Arachnid Alliance”, desperate to prove his worth.

The Alliance use their amazing skills to battle predators, the elements and the arachnologist himself. But in the end, their own rescue, and survival of their colony, all depends on our wimpy spider.

What genres does your screenplay fall under?

Family and adventure

Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Webbed is a feel-good story with commercial potential on a global scale. The story is a cinematic adventure that combines classic themes, including finding a new home, a bullying victim finding his strength, as well as addressing human issues such as ethnic diversity, overcrowding, and habitat loss. It educates in a fun, positive way and is wonderfully cinematic, with each colorful battle and escape perfect for the big screen.

A Hot100 selection in the Capital Fund Screenplay Competition 2017, it has been independently, professionally assessed as “wonderfully imaginative and will be entertaining to kids and their adults…And seriously, not enough can be said about how this script makes spiders charming.”

How would you describe this script in two words?

Charming Fun

What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

I think it would have to be “Wall-E”.

How long have you been working on this screenplay?

The idea germinated in my back garden about a year ago as I watched a spider spin an intricate, 3-D (yes, 3-D!) web.

How many stories have you written?

This is my fifth completed feature spec script. I am currently polishing (do we ever stop?) my Capital Screenplay Competition 2017 Family Genre Winner “One More Sleep”, whilst working on a new, single location comedy.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

After watching the Garden Orb spider finish its 3-D web, out of curiosity, I researched what spiders could do. The more I read, the more I thought ‘there’s fantastic material here for a great story’, using their attributes of urtication, ballooning, web design and whirling.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Trying to do my full-time job when creative inspiration strikes – they never seem to be mutually exclusive!

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I love music, travelling and cross country walking. I find it very therapeutic and nourishment for creative inspiration.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

After weeks of getting professional assessments from the toughest market (US), and then revising, I wanted to target a genre specific festival. I always welcome feedback; and in this instance it was encouraging, insightful and honest. This only makes a story better.
